Explaining how children become literate and how they learn to write, this work focuses on early childhood development. It puts literacy and learning in an international perspective, and is appropriate for multilingual learning and teaching environments. The author uses her daughter's early attempts at using written language to place meaning and communication at the centre of the literacy process. The book challenges parents and teachers to guide and support children so that they can make sense of their life experience and learn effectively. This work is aimed at teacher educators, teacher training colleges and universities, teachers practising at preliminary and primary level, and those studying or developing child development.
